SUMMARY:Big Asheville Science Salon
DESCRIPTION:Join TACF’s Director of Science\, Jared Westbrook\, for an informal presentation at the next Big Asheville Science Salon! \nOnce upon a time … the American chestnut dominated the forests of the Appalachian Range. As many as four billion of these trees abided the centuries providing habitat\, nutrifying soil\, and feeding bears\, birds\, and boars on an abundance of nuts. Alas\, that was before 1904\, when a parasitic fungus was introduced\, unleashing a devastating blight that decimated the population. In only a few decades\, more than 90% of American chestnuts were lost. Worse yet\, most remaining trees are root sprouts – clones of other trees – and therefore just as susceptible to the blight as previous generations. \nBut there is hope (through science!). A century later\, efforts to find a blight-resistant American chestnut and return the iconic tree to its native forests are making strides. \nFight the blight with geneticist Dr. Jared Westbrook! Learn how controlled breeding\, hybridization with blight-resistant species\, and transgenic insertion (aka bio-wizardry) are contributing to restoring the American chestnut. \nDr. Westbrook is Director of Science for the American Chestnut Foundation\, where he has spent nearly a decade combing genomes for genes that confer blight resistance and assessing the tens of thousands of trees that are bred\, crossed\, and backcrossed at the Foundation’s Meadowview Research Farms. \nDoors open at 6:00. Have a drink with old friends\, meet new ones\, and get ready for some serious science in a seriously un-serious setting. \nPresentation begins at 7:00 PM. Stick around for a lively Q&A session and discussion.

SUMMARY:MA/RI Westborough Community Land Trust Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Did you know there is an American Chestnut tree breeding orchard in Westborough? Learn the fascinating story behind the work that is being done there.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Presenter Brad Smith joined the American Chestnut Foundation in the early 1990’s\, upon spotting his first Chestnut in the wild after reading a National Geographic article about this new organization. He became a board member of the Massachusetts and Rhode Island Chapter soon after its founding in 2000; he is a past president and remains a director. He has been involved in surveying\, pollinating\, planting\, harvesting and crossbreeding Chestnuts for the last two decades. Brad has recently retired from teaching Latin for 35 years\, and has lived in Westborough since 1988.

SUMMARY:CT-TACF Chestnut Hike in Wyantenock State Forest in Warren
DESCRIPTION:Wyantenock State Forest \nA previous timber harvest at this location has allowed chestnut sprouts to grow to flowering height.  On this hike we will search for the flowering chestnut trees.  We will also be holding an optional workshop to learn how to obtain samples to verify their pure American status as well as additional information to enter them in our database and become part of our Germplasm Committee.  These flowering trees are young\, but hopefully will continue to producing fertile nuts to plant in our Germplasm Conservation Orchards. \nMeet at the parking area just off of Rt. 341 (just north of intersection with Rt. 202).  Wear tick and/or bug protective clothing as some trees may be encountered off the trail and need some bushwacking to reach. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Educational Hike With SAHC
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \nTHIS EVENT IS FULL \nCurious about American chestnuts? Love to hike and be outside? The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF) and Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC) are leading an educational hike at the future South Yellow Mountain Preserve in Newland\, NC. \nEven though American chestnuts are considered functionally extinct\, we are still able to view sprouts and small trees in our Western North Carolina forests and those planted and maintained by dedicated volunteers. Join TACF’s Regional Science Coordinator to learn more about how the blight has affected American chestnuts in this area and scientific progress toward restoration efforts as we hike to see two large-scale American chestnut plantings along a trail on South Yellow Mountain. \nThis hike is full\, but stay tuned for future hiking opportunities!

SUMMARY:Chestnut Chat: Darling 58 Update
DESCRIPTION:Join us September 15 from 11:30AM – 1:00PM (EDT)\, for TACF’s next LIVE Chestnut Chat. TACF’s Chief Conservation Officer Sara Fitzsimmons and SUNY-ESF’s American Chestnut Research and Restoration Project researcher Andy Newhouse\, along with others\, will share the latest updates about the current status of the Darling 58 transgenic American chestnut. There has been a lot of excitement around the potential release of this tree\, and recent regulatory delays and additional restrictions for distribution may reduce the ability for everyone to get seed\, seedlings\, or pollen as swiftly as originally hoped. In this Chestnut Chat\, we’ll go through some frequently asked questions\, then give participants an opportunity to ask their own questions related to Darling 58. \nTACF is expecting more than 900 people to join us for this Chestnut Chat. This will be a record attendance\, and we appreciate the significant amount of interest in this topic.  While everyone who joins will be able to watch and hear the chat\, only the first 500 will be able to participate in the question and chat feature.  To help make this a streamlined process\, we ask that you submit your questions here so we can organize and address as many of them as possible. \n \n Submit a question\n \n \n \n \n \n HOW TO PARTICIPATE (via Zoom Webinar)Pre-registration is required to attend this event. Pre-register here. After registering you will receive a unique URL link to use to join the event on the day of the chat. You can also add the event to your calendar from the webinar registration approval page. The meeting will open 15 minutes prior to the start time to allow an audio and video test. \n \n Click Here to Pre-Register\n \n \n \n \n \n You can watch the recording of this live chestnut chat on the chestnut chat archives.

SUMMARY:AL: Muscle Shoals Harvest
DESCRIPTION:The TVA Orchard in Muscle Shoals AL is ready for harvest. Swing by to help out and take some chestnuts home! The TVA orchard has been a staple of the Alabama chapter for years.\n \nChapter president\, Jason Cowan\, will be there starting around 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon. We will likely go until dark\, come as you would like!\n \nWhat to bring: sensible shoes and work gloves (we work with some spiky burs) are a must. Any pruning equipment and paper bags will go a long way. Dress for the weather and don’t forget water.\n \nThe orchard coordinates are 34.766876\, -87.637214.\n \nDirections to the orchard coming into Muscle Shoals on US72 ALT:\nUS72 Alt to Hwy 157 in Muscle Shoals\nTake a Right (North) at Hwy 157 (Wilson Dam Road). There is a Shell Station on the right-hand corner.\nContinue North on Hwy 157 Wilson Dam Road past E 6th Street\, Avalon Ave\, and E 2nd Street.\nAbout 0.9 miles north of the intersection of Wilson Dam Rd and E 2nd Street\, enter the left turn lane and turn left (west) into an unnamed paved road. This road is immediately across from the Occidental Chemical Plant on the east side of Wilson Dam Road. You’ll see a chain link gate across this road at the entrance to some TVA maintenance shops.\nAfter turning on the asphalt road\, immediately turn left before the TVA chain link gate onto a rough gravel road. This road runs under the TVA transmission lines and meanders—heavy vegetation on both sides of the road.\nAfter about 0.8 miles on the gravel road\, past a couple of locked gates on the right\, the road turns right into the TVA orchard (no gate). You should see the blue sign for the orchard after you turn in.
