SUMMARY:AL: Muscle Shoals Harvest
DESCRIPTION:The TVA Orchard in Muscle Shoals AL is ready for harvest. Swing by to help out and take some chestnuts home! The TVA orchard has been a staple of the Alabama chapter for years.\n \nChapter president\, Jason Cowan\, will be there starting around 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon. We will likely go until dark\, come as you would like!\n \nWhat to bring: sensible shoes and work gloves (we work with some spiky burs) are a must. Any pruning equipment and paper bags will go a long way. Dress for the weather and don’t forget water.\n \nThe orchard coordinates are 34.766876\, -87.637214.\n \nDirections to the orchard coming into Muscle Shoals on US72 ALT:\nUS72 Alt to Hwy 157 in Muscle Shoals\nTake a Right (North) at Hwy 157 (Wilson Dam Road). There is a Shell Station on the right-hand corner.\nContinue North on Hwy 157 Wilson Dam Road past E 6th Street\, Avalon Ave\, and E 2nd Street.\nAbout 0.9 miles north of the intersection of Wilson Dam Rd and E 2nd Street\, enter the left turn lane and turn left (west) into an unnamed paved road. This road is immediately across from the Occidental Chemical Plant on the east side of Wilson Dam Road. You’ll see a chain link gate across this road at the entrance to some TVA maintenance shops.\nAfter turning on the asphalt road\, immediately turn left before the TVA chain link gate onto a rough gravel road. This road runs under the TVA transmission lines and meanders—heavy vegetation on both sides of the road.\nAfter about 0.8 miles on the gravel road\, past a couple of locked gates on the right\, the road turns right into the TVA orchard (no gate). You should see the blue sign for the orchard after you turn in.

SUMMARY:CT Chapter co-sponsored with Harwinton Land Trust Screening of Clear Day Thunder
DESCRIPTION:Thursday September 28 at 6:30 pm in the Town Hall Assembly Room on Bentley Drive in Harwinton. \nPresented by the Harwinton Public Library and Harwinton Land Conservation Trust. \nJoin us to screen this new documentary film that tells the story of passionate citizen scientists and researchers working to restore this ecologically and economically important species. At the turn of the 20th century a deadly blight accidentally imported into the US devastated the American Chestnut. Within a span of only two generations\, the tree was nearly extinct.

SUMMARY:TN Volunteers - Chestnut Shucking Party!
DESCRIPTION:Who:  calling all Tennessee Chapter volunteers of The American Chestnut Foundation\n\nWhat:  a fun day processing this year’s harvest of backcross American chestnut seeds\n\nWhere: The Fortwood Street Greenhouse and Nursery\, on the campus of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga\, located at 833 Fortwood Street\, Chattanooga\, TN. 37403 (in UTC Parking Lot 37)\n\nWhen: Saturday\, 7 October 2023\, from 10:00 AM until the fun runs out.\n\nWhy: In order to harvest seeds from our backcross hybrids we need to collect the burs the day before they open (because as soon as the burs open the nuts fall out and are eaten by deer\, squirrels\, wild turkeys and other neighbors).\n\nHow: To prepare the seeds for winter\, we need to remove the chestnuts from their burs by hand (that’s the shucking part).  The chestnuts are then carefully cleaned\, surface sterilized\, sorted\, counted\, and packed into a moist medium (sphagnum) to be stratified for four months at 40 F.\n\nBring: A pair of puncture-proof gloves (if you have a pair)\, and dress for the weather.\n\nFor more information\, please contact Hill Craddock: 423-290-8924 or hill-craddock@utc.edu

SUMMARY:Carolinas Chapter Hike with TACF and Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy
DESCRIPTION:NOTICE: Given the impending rain and possible thunderstorm\, we have had to reschedule this hike to Nov 17 at 10AM. Please visit the new event page for details. \n  \nCurious about American chestnuts? Love to hike and be outside? Want to meet other conservation enthusiasts? Come join The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF) and Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC) for an educational hike at the future South Yellow Mountain Preserve in Newland\, NC on Friday\, October 20 at 10 AM! \nEven though American chestnuts are considered functionally extinct\, we are still able to view sprouts and small trees in our Western North Carolina forests and those planted and maintained by dedicated volunteers. Join TACF’s Regional Science Coordinator to learn more about how the blight has affected American chestnuts in this area and scientific progress toward restoration efforts as we hike to see two large-scale American chestnut plantings along a trail on South Yellow Mountain. \nThe hike will be ~2 miles long and guided by TACF and SAHC staff. This hike is considered strenuous\, with a 300+ foot elevation gain in .3 miles and requires an average level of fitness to accomplish. We expect to be wrapped up before lunch. Please use this information to determine if the hike is appropriate for you or any guests or minors you are considering bringing. If you have additional questions about the level of this activity\, please do not hesitate to reach out and we will do our best to advise you. \nOnce you register you will be sent instructions for parking location and other logistical details\, including a packing list. Access to the trailhead will involve a short ride in a SAHC vehicle from a designated meeting spot. This event is capped at 10 participants\, with a maximum of three participants per household/group to allow for greater accessibility. If you have already participated in this hike please consider others who may want to come out and experience it! Spots will go quickly\, so RSVP by responding to this email by Thursday morning\, October 19 to Southern Regional Science Coordinator Jamie Van Clief (details below).

Canham\, Ph.D.Senior Scientist\, EmeritusCary Institute of Ecosystem StudiesAuthor of Forests Adrift: Currents Shaping the Future of Northeastern Trees \nForests Adrift: Ecological Legacies and Modern Currents that Will Shape Eastern Forests \nDescription: Drawing from his recent book Forests Adrift\, Charles Canham will sketch both the ecological legacies and modern currents that will shape the future of eastern forests.  It is not possible to understand where our forests are headed without accounting for the legacies of centuries of changes in land use and forest management.  While the impacts of climate change rightly dominate headlines\, the effects on eastern forests will take place in the context of the many other currents that will determine the future distribution and abundance of eastern tree species.  Those include both the intrinsic process of forest succession\, and many human threats\, including air pollution\, invasive species\, and the ever-expanding list of introduced forest pests and pathogens. \nAbout the speaker: Charles Canham is a Senior Scientist\, Emeritus at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies\, where he has been on the scientific staff since 1984.  He has a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Cornell University\, and a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Botany from Montana State University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison\, respectively.  His primary research interests have focused on the ecology and management of temperate forests\, particularly in the Northeastern U.S.\, and is the author of Forests Adrift: Currents Shaping the Future of Northeastern Trees. \nPANEL DISCUSSION:Perspectives on Land Protection and Easements \nPanelists \nJack Stefferud | Senior Director of Land ProtectionNatural Lands | Media\, PANatural Lands is a non-profit organization that saves open space\, cares for nature\, and connects people to the outdoors in eastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey.
