Canham\, Ph.D.Senior Scientist\, EmeritusCary Institute of Ecosystem StudiesAuthor of Forests Adrift: Currents Shaping the Future of Northeastern Trees \nForests Adrift: Ecological Legacies and Modern Currents that Will Shape Eastern Forests \nDescription: Drawing from his recent book Forests Adrift\, Charles Canham will sketch both the ecological legacies and modern currents that will shape the future of eastern forests.  It is not possible to understand where our forests are headed without accounting for the legacies of centuries of changes in land use and forest management.  While the impacts of climate change rightly dominate headlines\, the effects on eastern forests will take place in the context of the many other currents that will determine the future distribution and abundance of eastern tree species.  Those include both the intrinsic process of forest succession\, and many human threats\, including air pollution\, invasive species\, and the ever-expanding list of introduced forest pests and pathogens. \nAbout the speaker: Charles Canham is a Senior Scientist\, Emeritus at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies\, where he has been on the scientific staff since 1984.  He has a Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Cornell University\, and a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Botany from Montana State University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison\, respectively.  His primary research interests have focused on the ecology and management of temperate forests\, particularly in the Northeastern U.S.\, and is the author of Forests Adrift: Currents Shaping the Future of Northeastern Trees. \nPANEL DISCUSSION:Perspectives on Land Protection and Easements \nPanelists \nJack Stefferud | Senior Director of Land ProtectionNatural Lands | Media\, PANatural Lands is a non-profit organization that saves open space\, cares for nature\, and connects people to the outdoors in eastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey. Natural Lands has been protecting open space since the early 1950s\, completing hundreds of conservation projects. We love saving land\, but we think it is just the first step. \nAmanda Burkard-Sell | Agriculture Program ManagerBerks Co. Dept. of Agriculture | Leesport\, PAThe Berks County Agricultural Land Preservation Board\, assisted by staff of the Berks County Department of Agriculture\, is responsible for administering the Agricultural Conservation Easement (ACE) Program. The ACE Program permanently preserves farmland to ensure the future of agriculture in Berks County through the purchase of agricultural conservation easements. \nLarry Lloyd | Senior EcologistBerks NatureReading\, PABerks Nature is a 501C3 Non-profit land trust capable of owning land for preserves and holding conservation easements.  We can receive charitable donations to accomplish those ends and we can also apply for and administer public and private grants to accomplish those ends. \nFall Meeting TourCastanea Farms – Chestnut Processing Facility \nRick Hartlieb\, Chapter President will lead a tour of the processing facilities at his chestnut farm. Rick Hartlieb\, Chapter President will lead a tour of the processing facilities at his chestnut farm. Castanea Farms\, LLC is owned and operated by Jen and Rick Hartlieb. The property dates back to 1870. Its namesake is derived from the Latin name for chestnut ‘Castanea’. Adjacent to the original log house is the second-largest Japanese Chestnut in Pennsylvania. SUMMARY:Carolinas Chapter Hike with TACF and Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: Unfortunately\, this hike has to be canceled once again. The weather conditions are not favorable\, with forecasts predicting rain and low temperatures in the morning. We will have another hike at a later date\, which is yet to be determined. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding. \nIn the meantime please come out and join us Sunday\, December 3rd from 12:00-3:00PM at the Fonta Flora brewery in Nebo\, NC to celebrate TACF’s 40th Anniversary! (visit event page) \n\nCurious about American chestnuts? Love to hike and be outside? Want to meet other conservation enthusiasts? Come join The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF) and Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC) for an educational hike at the future South Yellow Mountain Preserve in Newland\, NC on Friday\, Novermber 17 at 10 AM! \nEven though American chestnuts are considered functionally extinct\, we are still able to view sprouts and small trees in our Western North Carolina forests and those planted and maintained by dedicated volunteers. Join TACF’s Regional Science Coordinator to learn more about how the blight has affected American chestnuts in this area and scientific progress toward restoration efforts as we hike to see two large-scale American chestnut plantings along a trail on South Yellow Mountain. \nThe hike will be ~2 miles long and guided by TACF and SAHC staff. This hike is considered strenuous\, with a 300+ foot elevation gain in .3 miles and requires an average level of fitness to accomplish. We expect to be wrapped up before lunch. Please use this information to determine if the hike is appropriate for you or any guests or minors you are considering bringing. If you have additional questions about the level of this activity\, please do not hesitate to reach out and we will do our best to advise you. \nOnce you register you will be sent instructions for parking location and other logistical details\, including a packing list. Access to the trailhead will involve a short ride in a SAHC vehicle from a designated meeting spot. \nThis event is capped at 10 participants\, with a maximum of three participants per household/group to allow for greater accessibility. If you have already participated in this hike please consider others who may want to come out and experience it! Spots will go quickly\, so RSVP by responding to by Thursday morning\, November 18 to Southern Regional Science Coordinator Jamie Van Clief (details below).

SUMMARY:Chestnut Chat: Mineland Reclamation
DESCRIPTION:Green Forests Work – Restoring Native Forests and Creating Economic Opportunities on Surface Mines across Appalachia \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Join us November 17 from 11:30AM – 1:00PM (EDT)\, for TACF’s next LIVE Chestnut Chat. Our special guest Michael French will discuss mineland reclamation and its role in American chestnut restoration. \nThis chat will provide an overview of the history of surface mining reclamation\, the reforestation of surface mines\, and how the Appalachian Regional Reforestation Initiative and Green Forests Work (GFW) are implementing techniques that expedite the establishment of healthy\, diverse\, native forests on former surface mines. The chat will also discuss GFW’s progress\, recent projects\, and how the restoration of degraded lands can play a role in restoring forest types and species that have undergone declines\, such as American chestnut. \n \n \n \n \n \n HOW TO PARTICIPATE (via Zoom Webinar) \nPre-registration is required to attend this event. Pre-register here. After registering you will receive a unique URL link to join the event on the day of the chat. You can also add the event to your calendar from the webinar registration approval page. The meeting will open 15 minutes prior to the start time to allow an audio and video test. \n \n Click Here to Pre-Register
