SUMMARY:Chestnut Chat- Evolution of Castanea and Cryphonectria
DESCRIPTION:Join us February 16\, 2024\, from 11:30AM – 1:00PM (EPT)\, for the next LIVE Chestnut Chat. \nIn this edition\, Joanna Malukiewicz will discuss the interplay in the evolution of Castanea and the chestnut blight fungus (Cryphonectria parasitica). Listen in to learn about the fascinating history of ancient natural hybridization among chestnut species across East Asia\, Europe\, and North America\, and whether or not hybridization has played any role in the relative blight resistance or susceptibility of the extant chestnut species. \n \n \n \n \n \n HOW TO PARTICIPATE (via Zoom Webinar) \nPre-registration is required to attend this event. After registering you will receive a unique URL link to join the event on the day of the chat. You can also add the event to your calendar from the webinar registration approval page. The meeting will open 15 minutes prior to the start time to allow an audio and video test. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dr. Joanna Malukiewicz has been a research associate working with Drs. Jason Holliday (VT) and Jared Westbrook (TACF) to elucidate how the evolutionary history of chestnuts (Castanea) has influenced their susceptibility and resistance to chestnut blight (Cryphonectria parasitica). Her work on Castanea has included analysis of whole genomic resequencing data to look into questions regarding phylogeny\, genetic diversity\, and hybridization of chestnuts and the natural history of chestnut blight. She has also contributed to analysis of functional genomic data of chestnuts. Dr. Malukiewicz has specifically focused on elucidating the role of hybridization in shaping divergence and resistance and susceptibility of various chestnut species to chestnut blight.

SUMMARY:Chestnut Chat - Assertion-Evidence Approach to Presentations
DESCRIPTION:Rethinking Scientific Presentations: The Assertion−Evidence Structure\n \n \n \n \n \n Join us on March 15\, 2024\, from 11:30AM – 1:00PM (EPT)\, for the next LIVE Chestnut Chat. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n As chestnut enthusiasts\, we often find ourselves sharing complex information with friends\, family\, and strangers. The good news is that science presentations don’t have to be boring or ineffective! In this episode\, Penn State’s Michael Alley will speak about a better way; the assertion-evidence approach. In this approach\, a speaker builds the talk on key messages supported by visual evidence. Michael’s research has found that assertion-evidence talks are more focused and much better understood by audiences. In addition\, speakers using this method (even those initially nervous about making presentations) report that using the assertion-evidence approach has given them more confidence. Join us to learn how to step up your science presentation game! \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n HOW TO PARTICIPATE (via Zoom Webinar) \nPre-registration is required to attend this event. Pre-register here. After registering you will receive a unique URL link to join the event on the day of the chat. You can also add the event to your calendar from the webinar registration approval page. He is the author of The Craft of Scientific Presentations (Springer\, 2013)\, which has been translated into Japanese and Chinese\, and The Craft of Scientific Writing (Springer\, 2018). Over the past decade\, he has taught presentations and writing to engineers and scientists on four continents. Sites include Google\, Harvard Medical School\, MIT\, Texas Instruments\, the University of Oslo\, and the University of Illinois. Alley’s website on presentations (assertion-evidence.com) is a top Google listing for assertion-evidence presentations and his website on writing (craftofscientificwriting.org) is a top Google listing for writing as an engineer or scientist.

Bundle sizes and maximum purchase limits are dependent upon availability and are determined from year to year. Viability of wild-type American seedlings is not guaranteed by TACF. \nIn order to prevent the spread of contagions from the native range\, no seedlings will be shipped to states west of the Mississippi River\, nor outside the contiguous United States. \nFor important information about these bareroot seedlings and about the sale\, please visit our Seeds and Seedlings page.

SUMMARY:RI - Documentary Screening - Clear Day Thunder
DESCRIPTION:As part of its “Voices of the Land” series\, Westerly Land Trust in partnership with The United Theatre hosts a screening of Clear DayThunder: Rescuing the American Chestnut. At the turn of the 20th century\, a deadly blight accidentally imported into the U.S. from Asia devastated the American Chestnut. Within a span of only two generations\, the tree was nearly extinct. This new documentary film tells the story of passionate citizen scientists and researchers working to restore this ecologically and economically important species\, during this pivotal moment.  \nTickets are free but you must click the “tickets” button on the United Theatre event page to register. \n\n3/24/2024\nWesterly\, RI\nUnited Theatre\nChestnut Documentary – Clear DayThunder Screening – Rescuing The American Chestnut\nFor more information\, visit the event page at the United Theatre website\n\n \n Tickets & Info

SUMMARY:ME - Clear Day Thunder Documentary\, Wells National Estuarine Reserve
DESCRIPTION:On March 28\, 2024 from 3:30 – 5:30\, the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve is hosting a screening of The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF) award-winning documentary Clear Day Thunder: Rescuing the American Chestnut at Laudholm Farm at 342 Laudholm Farm Road in Wells\, ME. They require no reservations but request a $5 donation per person. \nThe film runs 52 minutes and will be followed by a Q&A with Dr. Tom Klak from the University of New England in Biddeford. Dr. Klak has been deeply involved in the effort to produce a transgenic blight-resistant chestnut. If you have questions about that research\, this is a great opportunity to ask an expert. This is also a great chance to learn more about TACF\, our mission\, and ways to get involved. \nThe film documents the history of the American chestnut and why so many people have worked so hard for so long to return it to the forests it once graced from Georgia to Maine. The film weaves the story of a tree\, its people\, and our collective vision for its restoration. You will leave even more inspired to be a part of the chestnut story. \nFind more event info on the Wells Reserve at Laudholm website.
