SUMMARY:VA-Informational Meeting about Identifying LSAs
DESCRIPTION:American Chestnuts have not all been reduced to small bushes by the blight. There are large trees in the woods\, some of which have more resistance than others. Clint Morse and the Virginia Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation want to recruit you to bring the large surviving American Chestnuts out of the woods so that we can build to something historic: the first orchard from wild American chestnuts with elevated blight resistance in the country. With the help of The American Chestnut Foundation and with the support of Grayson Landcare\, we hope to put that orchard in Grayson County at Matthews State Forest. \nClint Morse will share details of the project and how you can help. There will be many volunteer opportunities for all ages\, skill levels\, and interests. The goal\, at the end of the meeting\, is to have a list of projects we can complete in year 1 and volunteers ready\, willing\, and able to complete these projects. For more details on the projects this group will be pursuing\, see the Grayson Landcare write-up: https://graysonlandcare.org/2026/03/chestnuts/ \nAs an added bonus\, we will also distribute American and Advanced Hybrid nuts that you can grow today\, in your backyard\, in raised bed trials we started last year. Learn More.

SUMMARY:CT - Chestnut educational program and history walk at Case Mountain
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, April 11\, volunteers from the CT Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation will present an illustrated program at the cabin\, describing the importance and scope of the Chestnut\, the blight\, the wood itself\, and tree restoration efforts. Forward this email to spread the word. Botanists welcome! \nOn your own\, walk in\, about a half mile\, from either the Spring Street/Glen Road/waterfall area OR from the “Case Mt. SUMMARY:Chestnut Chat: Ginkgo\, the Rescue of a Remarkable Tree
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, April 17\, 2026\, from 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM (Eastern)\, for the next LIVE Chestnut Chat webinar. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Special guest\, Sir Peter Crane\, will explore the inspiring comeback story of the ginkgo tree. Perhaps the world’s most distinctive tree\, ginkgo is a botanical oddity and a widely recognized “living fossil.” Wild ginkgo exists only in China\, but today it is beloved for the elegance of its leaves\, prized for its edible nuts\, and revered for its longevity. It is one of the world’s most popular street trees and herbal medicines. The lecture will explore the evolutionary and cultural history of the species from its mysterious origin through its proliferation\, drastic decline\, and ultimate resurgence. Like the American chestnut\, the most recent chapters in the evolutionary and cultural biography of ginkgo have been written by people. For a species once on the brink of extinction\, what has unfolded has been a remarkable turnaround. Ginkgo is now widely grown\, widely known\, and a “good news” story\, a tree that people saved. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n HOW TO PARTICIPATE (via Zoom Webinar) \nPre-registration is required to attend this event. Pre-register here. After registering\, you will receive an email with a unique URL link to join the event. You can also add the event to your calendar from the webinar registration approval page. The meeting will open 15 minutes prior to the start time to allow an audio and video test. \n \n Pre-Register Here\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Presenter\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Peter Crane\nPresident of the Oak Spring Garden Foundation \n \n \n \n \n \n Bio\nSir Peter Crane FRS is President of the Oak Spring Garden Foundation in Virginia (osgf.org)\, an estate of Rachel Lambert Mellon that includes an exquisite garden as well as an exceptional library focused on the history of plant science\, plant exploration\, and the development of gardens and landscape design. He is known internationally for his work on the diversity of plant life – its origin\, fossil history\, current status\, conservation and use. Peter received the International Prize for Biology in December 2014 and the Darwin-Wallace Medal of the Linnean Society of London in 2024. In 2024 he also received the Garden Club of America Medal of Honor.

SUMMARY:CT Chapter Wigwam Brook Chestnut Orchard Dedication
DESCRIPTION:As a member of the CT Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation and the Litchfield Hills Audubon Society\, John C. Baker spearheaded efforts to plant the Backcross Orchard at the Wigwam Brook Wildlife Sanctuary.  He helped pollinate local American chestnuts with backcrossed pollen from TACF’s Meadowview Research Farm to obtain the nuts that would fill the orchard.  He planned\, planted and cared for the trees in this orchard from its beginning in 2010 until his passing in September of 2024. John was a dedicated board member of the CT chapter for 15 years and served as the chairman of the Nominations Committee.  We will be naiming the chestnut orchard in John’s honor at a dedication Ceremony with the Litchfield Hills Audubon Society and plant a few more chestnuts to carry on the legacy that John created.
