SUMMARY:Chestnut Chat: Breeding Disease Resistance in Loblolly Pine and Prospects for American Chestnut
DESCRIPTION:Slow and Steady Wins the Race: How Breeding has Improved Disease Resistance in Loblolly Pine and Prospects for American Chestnut\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Join us on Friday\, October 10\, 2025\, from 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM (Eastern)\, for the next LIVE Chestnut Chat. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Our special guest\, Dr. Trevor Walker\, Assistant Professor of Forest Genetics and Co-Director of the Cooperative Tree Improvement Program at NC State University\, will share insights from NC State’s loblolly pine breeding program and discuss how they might inform TACF’s American chestnut breeding efforts. \n“Breeding with recurrent selection is an ancient technology\, transforming wolves to dogs and teosinte to modern maize. In the last 30 years\, advances in statistics and DNA sequencing have accelerated its effectiveness\, but the basics remain unchanged. I will discuss 70 years of progress in breeding loblolly pine for disease resistance\, growth\, and stem form for tree farmers in the southeastern U.S. The present-day strategy combines techniques developed over decades\, incorporation of new technology\, and abandoning practices ill-suited to loblolly biology. Considering American chestnut\, I will outline which practices should work\, which probably won’t\, and why.” \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n HOW TO PARTICIPATE (via Zoom Webinar) \nPre-registration is required to attend this event. Pre-register here. After registering\, you will receive an email with a unique URL link to join the event. You can also add the event to your calendar from the webinar registration approval page. The meeting will open 15 minutes prior to the start time to allow an audio and video test. \n \n Pre-Register Here\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Presenter\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Dr. Trevor Walker\nAssistant Professor of Forest Genetics\, Co-Director of the Cooperative Tree Improvement Program at NC State University \n \n \n \n \n \n Bio\nTrevor is a forester\, tree breeder\, and quantitative geneticist. His undergraduate degree is in forest management and his masters is in forest biometrics from Stephen F. Austin State University. After his masters\, he worked as a timber cruiser and inventory analyst for timber companies in the southern United States. He studied forest genetics for his PhD at NC State University\, where he worked as a tree breeder for the Cooperative Tree Improvement Program. He assumed the role of Co-Director and Assistant Professor in 2023.

SUMMARY:TN - Chestnut Shucking Party (part two) at the Fortwood Street Greenhouse
DESCRIPTION:Chestnut Shucking Part Two10:00AM-3:00PM on Saturday\, October 25th\, 2025 \nWhat to know: Because we’re not going to finish on the 18th\, we’re calling all Tennessee Chapter volunteers of The American Chestnut Foundation for another fun day processing this year’s harvest of backcross American chestnut seeds! \nIn order to harvest seeds from our backcross hybrids we need to collect the burs the day before they open (because as soon as the burs open the nuts fall out and are eaten by deer\, squirrels\, wild turkeys and other neighbors). To prepare the seeds for winter\, we need to remove the chestnuts from their burs by hand (that’s the shucking part). The chestnuts are then carefully cleaned\, surface sterilized\, sorted\, counted\, and packed into a moist medium (sphagnum) to be stratified for four months at 40 F. Come help get our chestnuts out of their burs! Please join us on Saturday\, 25 October\, in Chattanooga\, TN for a chestnut shucking party\, a fun day processing this year’s harvest of backcross American chestnut seeds! \nPlease bring a pair of puncture-proof gloves (if you have a pair)\, and dress for the weather! \nWhere: The Fortwood Street Greenhouse and Nursery\, on the campus of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga\, located at 833 Fortwood Street\, Chattanooga\, TN. 37403 (Parking available in UTC Parking Lot 37). \n\nGoogle Maps link\nApple Maps link\n\nSee you there! For more information\, please contact Hill Craddock: 423-290-8924 or hill-craddock@utc.edu

Jessica currently leads the winter wheat breeding program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  Her mission is to develop varieties that will help improve the profitability of wheat production in the eastern part of the Midwest and Midsouth. In line with this goal\, Jessica’s scholarly research program develops and implements new ways to improve the efficiency of small grains breeding. Before joining the University of Illinois\, Jessica worked at International Rice Research Institute (IRRI)\, located in the Philippines and at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT)\, located in Mexico.

DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, February 20\, 2026\, from 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM (Eastern)\, for the next LIVE Chestnut Chat webinar. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Chestnuts Across Maine (CAM) is an exciting new initiative of the Maine Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation (ME-TACF)\, partnering with land trusts\, state parks\, schools\, and town squares to establish small plantings of American chestnuts on publicly accessible lands. Their vision is that by 2035\, anyone who wishes to see a live American chestnut tree can find one less than an hour’s drive from home\, and see chestnut trees thriving within a 10-minute walk of every Maine school. Join Maine Chapter Vice President\, Eva Butler\, to learn more about this inspiring effort and how it’s taking root across the state. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n HOW TO PARTICIPATE (via Zoom Webinar) \nPre-registration is required to attend this event. SUMMARY:Tennessee Chapter Annual Meeting and Seedling Distribution
DESCRIPTION:The Tennessee Chapter is excited to host another annual meeting at Tennessee Tech University! Please join us to hear presentations by TACF staff\, TN-TACF board members\, and chestnut researchers on recent scientific results. \nChestnut seedlings will be distributed during the lunch break. The seedlings are American hybrids derived from more than 25 years of TN-TACF’s backcross breeding program. We will ask for a donation for each set of trees; funds that directly support the work of the Tennessee Chapter. Information on how to grow and maintain chestnut trees will be provided along with the seedlings. TN-TACF board members will be on hand to help explain our breeding program\, and to accept new membership applications ($40 per year). \nWe will end the meeting with a tour of the TN-TACF experimental chestnut orchard on the campus of Tennessee Tech. Come see chestnut breeding in action! \nTo attend\, RSVP here. \nMore Information \n \nTennessee Chapter Volunteers came together to plant advance hybrid seeds at the Mountain Homes Seed Orchard \n
