SUMMARY:CT Chapter Wigwam Brook Chestnut Orchard Dedication
DESCRIPTION:As a member of the CT Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation and the Litchfield Hills Audubon Society\, John C. Baker spearheaded efforts to plant the Backcross Orchard at the Wigwam Brook Wildlife Sanctuary.  He helped pollinate local American chestnuts with backcrossed pollen from TACF’s Meadowview Research Farm to obtain the nuts that would fill the orchard.  He planned\, planted and cared for the trees in this orchard from its beginning in 2010 until his passing in September of 2024. John was a dedicated board member of the CT chapter for 15 years and served as the chairman of the Nominations Committee.  We will be naiming the chestnut orchard in John’s honor at a dedication Ceremony with the Litchfield Hills Audubon Society and plant a few more chestnuts to carry on the legacy that John created.

SUMMARY:VT/NH Chapter American Chestnut Demonstration Trail at McLane Center
DESCRIPTION:Starting in 2016\, VT/NH Chapter volunteers of the American Chestnut Foundation started an American chestnut demonstration planting at the NH Audubon’s McLane Center in Concord\, NH. Over the years\, the patch cut where the trees were planted has regrown and many of the trees that were planted are no longer visible from the trail that goes by them. We could use some volunteers to help us create a short footpath into the heart of the planting on Saturday morning\, June 13th from 8 to 10 AM. Work will include clearing brushy vegetation\, lifting and moving some longer pieces of previously cut wood\, and planting some new potentially blight-resistant nuts. Bring work gloves\, water\, maybe a rake or pruners if available. And of course\, protection from the sun and ticks. \nFor those interested\, there will also be a presentation on the Restoration of the American Chestnut sponsored by NH Audubon at the McLane Center later that morning at 11:00 AM. The presentation will be followed by a short hike around the property to locate surviving wild American chestnut sprouts\, ending at the demonstration planting. For registration and more information\, visit the NH Audubon website at: https://nhaudubon.org/event/restoration-of-the-american-chestnut/

SUMMARY:Chestnut Chat: Does hybridization help? Testing for an adaptive role of hybridization and introgression in Texas sunflowers
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, August 21\, 2026\, from 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM (Eastern)\, for the next LIVE Chestnut Chat webinar. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Species have offspring with others of their same kind\, except when they don’t. This process\, called hybridization\, was long thought to be an evolutionary mistake and largely irrelevant\, but modern work has shown that it is both common and important. \nIn this talk\, Dr. Owens will review how we define species\, what happens when species mix together\, and how modern genomics lets us probe these questions. In the second half of the talk\, Dr. Owens will explore the case of Helianthus annuus texanus\, the Texas common sunflower\, which was thought to be a hybrid of two species. He will show the results of an experiment to recreate the species and what happens in the genome when hybrids are allowed to evolve in the wild. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n HOW TO PARTICIPATE (via Zoom Webinar) \nPre-registration is required to attend this event. Pre-register here. After registering\, you will receive an email with a unique URL link to join the event. You can also add the event to your calendar from the webinar registration approval page. His work focuses on questions in evolutionary genomics with a focus on the role of hybridization and genome structural variation. He works on a diverse array of species including sunflowers\, kelp\, and rockfish. Dr. Owens completed his PhD at the University of British Columbia and was a Banting Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California\, Berkeley.

SUMMARY:2026 UT Chattanooga Shucking Party
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Saturday in Chattanooga\, TN for a chestnut shucking party\, a fun day processing this year’s harvest of backcross American chestnut seeds! \nIn order to harvest seeds from our backcross hybrids we need to collect the burs the day before they open (because as soon as the burs open the nuts fall out and are eaten by deer\, squirrels\, wild turkeys and other neighbors). To prepare the seeds for winter\, we need to remove the chestnuts from their burs by hand (that’s the shucking part). The chestnuts are then carefully cleaned\, surface sterilized\, sorted\, counted\, and packed into a moist medium (sphagnum) to be stratified for four months at 40 F. \nPlease bring a pair of puncture-proof gloves (if you have a pair)\, and dress for the weather! \nMore details\, including location\, will be shared once you have registered and signed a waiver.
