SUMMARY:Help the VA-TACF Chapter Plant Chestnut Seeds
DESCRIPTION:The VA-TACF Chapter is looking for a few good volunteers to celebrate the arrival of spring by planting chestnuts. What better way to celebrate the coming warmer weather than to be outside getting a little dirt under your fingernails for a good cause? We have 5\,000 chestnuts to plant (last year was a huge harvest) so we need all of you! \nThe planting is scheduled to take place March 27-30 at Sky Meadows State Park in Delaplane the first couple of days. Then we’ll head to Banshee Reeks in Leesburg or the State Arboretum in Boyce. (Specific dates/times will be determined based on when the orchards are ready.) \nThe planting does not require physical strength but you need to be able to kneel and stand up off and on throughout the day. Everyone will gather at 9:00AM\, break for lunch (provided by the chapter) and work a few more hours after lunch each day. Park in the main visitor lot and walk to the orchard. There will be people present to show you where to go if you need assistance. \nWhat to bring: either a trowel or a bulb planter\, or both; if you have a 5-gallon bucket or a rubber mallet for pounding stakes\, bring those. (Label your tools so you can find it when you’re done.) Also bring a water bottle\, bug repellent\, snacks (if necessary)\, and sun protection. Please contact chapter member\, Catherine Mayes with your interest and availability by email or voicemail: (540) 364-1922. Hope to see you in there!

SUMMARY:Removing Dead Trees in The Plains - July 5
DESCRIPTION:Dear chestnut lovers: \nOn Thursday\, July 5\, we will be cutting up and removing downed trees from an orchard in The Plains.  We cut down trees that didn’t have the genetics we are looking for for blight resistance\, but were unable that day to cut up and haul off them off.  We need to get them out of the orchard so it can be mowed.  The landowner will provide a tractor and a wagon\, but the Chapter needs to supply the labor.  Your help will be hugely appreciated. \nDate: July 5 \nTime: 9:00 – 11:00 (or until finished) \nLocation:  Meet at the Marshall office (address below) and we will caravan/carpool to the site. \nThank you in advance\, \nCathy \nCatherine Mayes\, President\nVirginia Chapter\, The American Chestnut Foundation \n8266 E.
