SUMMARY:Deer Fence Installation at Manchester Land Conservation Trust GCO
DESCRIPTION:The Manchester Land Conservation Trust GCO was planted back in the spring\, but due to lack of fencing supplies due to COVID\, and a thunderstorm bringing a quick ending to our spring planting day\, installation of the fencing was put off to a later time.  Now that we have the supplies available\, come to see how well the seedlings are growing and help us install the protective fencing so that these seedlings can survive to flowering height and provide us with the nuts of future chestnut generations.  Bring work gloves and plenty of water.  Meet us up at the chestnut orchard which is close to the maintenance garage at the Bush Hill Preserve\, 330 Bush Hill Rd\, Manchester. \nWe have also teamed up with the Girl Scouts of CT to have scouts transplant American chestnut seedlings at the orchard. This will help them fulfill their Girl Scout Tree Promise of planting 5 million trees across the country in 5 years to help combat climate change.

SUMMARY:CT-TACF Naugatuck SF\, Sanford Block Chestnut Hike
DESCRIPTION:A previous timber harvest at this location has potential for chestnut sprouts to grow to flowering height.  It is unknown if there are any chestnuts in this area\, but was suggested as a good place to look by a DEEP forester.  On this hike we will search for the flowering chestnut trees.  We will also be holding an optional workshop to learn how to obtain samples to verify their pure American status and additional information to enter them in our database.  Wear tick and/or bug protective clothing as some trees may be encountered off the trail and need some bushwacking to reach.  Meet at the Quinnipiac Trailhead off of Downs Rd.

SUMMARY:CT-TACF Chestnut Hike in Wyantenock State Forest\, Warren
DESCRIPTION:A previous timber harvest at this location has allowed chestnut sprouts to grow to flowering height.  On this hike we will search for the flowering chestnut trees.  We will also be holding an optional workshop to learn how to obtain samples to verify their pure American status and additional information to enter them in our database.  These flowering trees are young\, but hopefully will soon be producing fertile nuts to plant in our Germplasm Conservation Orchards. \nMeet at the parking area just off of Rt. 341 (just north of intersection with Rt. 202).  Wear tick and/or bug protective clothing as some trees may be encountered off the trail and need some bushwacking to reach. \n  \n***UPDATE***  –  As of Friday afternoon\, 6/18\, I had not heard that the timber harvest has begun\, so I am assuming the parking lot will still be open when we get there Sunday morning. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Chestnut Tree Hike in Nehantic State Forest hosted by the Lyme Land Trust.
DESCRIPTION:Chestnut Tree Hike in Nehantic State Forest hosted by the Lyme Land Trust. \nJoin Emery Gluck\, retired CT DEEP forester\, and Jack Swatt\, President of the CT Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation for a walk to see some of the largest surviving chestnut trees in Connecticut. Large chestnut trees are rarely seen since they were devastated by a blight 100 years ago. Emery Gluck will talk about forest history and explain the management of the forest. The hike will be about one-mile along the Goodwin Trail at Nehantic State Forest in East Lyme to reach these beautiful trees. Some off-trail hiking will be required to see the second tree. Most of the hike is generally easy terrain with a few ups and downs. Sturdy shoes are a must; a walking stick would be helpful as well. Bring water. \nSpace is limited. Reservations are required. Contact education@lymelandtrust.org to reserve a spot.  If the 10:00 AM Hike fills\, a second hike may be added. \nSocial distancing will be followed based on current policies. \nRain day is Sunday\, June 20 at 10 am.

SUMMARY:THE AMERICAN CHESTNUT Can we restore this once dominant tree back to the forests of Connecticut?
DESCRIPTION:A Virtual Program hosted By Environmental Learning Centers of Connecticut (ELCCT) \n  \nSaturday\, March 13\, 2021\n10:00am – 11:00am\nFREE\nFormat: Virtual via ZOOM (link sent after registration) \nVirtually join Jack Swatt\, President of the CT Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation for an informative talk about the American Chestnut tree. The American chestnut was a reliable provider of food and shelter for wildlife as well as Native and Early Americans until an introduced blight fungus crippled the species in the early 20th century.  Learn about the history of the American chestnut\, it’s decline and the efforts currently underway to try and restore this keystone species back to the forests of Connecticut. \nJack Swatt has been a member of The American Chestnut Foundation since 1993.  He received a B.S. in Biological Sciences from UConn in 1983\, an M.S. in Chemistry from CCSU in 1992 and graduated from the Albany Medical College Physician Assistant Program in 1996.  He currently is employed by The Hospital of Central Connecticut as a Physician Assistant in Hospitalist Medicine. \nJack has planted several Restoration Chestnuts on his property in Wolcott\, CT and monitors several native American Chestnut trees found in Naugatuck State Forest.  He is also an active volunteer for the Wolcott Fire Dept. Co. #2\, CT DEEP (monitoring wintering eagles and Whip-poor-wills)\, Audubon CT\, CT Audubon\, NH Audubon\, the Loon Preservation Committee and the Society to Protect New Hampshire Forests (aka the Forest Society). \n*To pre-register for this virtual event\, please contact Erin O’Connell at eoconnell@elcct.org or 860.583.1234 by Friday\, March 12\, 2021.

SUMMARY:CT-TACF Chestnut hike at Bull Hill Preserve\, Thompson
DESCRIPTION:CT-TACF and the Wyndham Land Trust will be co-sponsoring a chestnut walk  at WLT’s Bull  Hill  Preserve  in Thompson  CT  on  June  27th  at 10:00  AM.  Meet  in  the  parking  area on Bull Hill Rd.  We will be taking a short easy hike to the viewpoint at the top of Bull Hill.  A recent timber harvest opened up the canopy for chestnut sprouts to flourish in the increased sunlight.  Last fall an American chestnut full of burs was found right along the trail.  Since the nuts were fertile\, at least one other chestnut tree in the area is flowering to provide pollen for the nut-producing tree.  Join us as we check in on last year’s nut producing tree and search the cleared summit for additional flowering American chestnuts.  Bring plenty of drinking water\, comfortable hiking shoes and your love of the great outdoors.  Please bring a mask as all current social distancing rules will be utilized for everyone’s safety.
