SUMMARY:Chestnut Hike at Naugatuck State Forest
DESCRIPTION:   \nJoin us for an educational walk at Naugatuck State Forest to look for flowering native American chestnut trees. TACF is attempting to increase our search for these trees for several upcoming projects including; the establishment of Germplasm Conservation Orchards\, testing native chestnut genetic diversity\, and collecting pollen to establish resistant transgenic American chestnut lines. This walk will show attendees how to identify native American chestnut trees. We’ll also venture onto some of the West Block trails looking to discover more flowering native trees to add to our database and use in future projects. \nPlease meet at the parking area at the end of Hunter’s Mountain Road in Naugatuck. From Rt. 8 take exit 26 for Rt. 63. Head west on Rt. 63 (From Rt. 8 Southbound take a right\, from Northbound take a left) and while crossing the bridge\, get in the left lane. Take the second left onto Scott Street. At the top of a short hill\, take the first left onto Lewis Street. (Caution: do not turn onto the hairpin turn onto Gorman.) Go straight on Lewis which eventually turns into Hunters Mountain Road. Follow Hunter’s Mountain Road until it ends (Caution: be careful on this road as there are several sharp hairpin turns going up the mountain.) There is a large parking area at the end\, as well as a smaller one on the left\, just before it ends.

SUMMARY:Salem Chestnut Backcross Orchard Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:On June 9\, the CT Chapter will have an orchard demonstration at the Salem Backcross Orchard from 9:00AM – 11:00AM\, hosted by CT Chapter board member\, David Bingham. First we will tour the backcross orchard he established on his property in 2006. At this time of year many of the larger sized trees will be in bloom giving us an up close view of the flowering trees. Following the tour\, we will travel a short distance to his family camp to see one of the remaining native American chestnut trees in CT which survives on that property. This tree was used as a mother tree for some of the seeds used in the orchard. We will also have some light refreshments at the Bingham Family Camp. \n \nDirections: the Salem Orchard is on White Birch Rd. in Salem\, CT. From Rt 82 (East Haddam Rd)\, turn south onto Darling Road and after 0.2 miles bear right onto White Birch Rd at the first stop sign. Go 0.2 miles on White Birch Rd and look for signs for TACF on the left. \n
