SUMMARY:Bur Collection at Fortune's Cove Orchard
DESCRIPTION:We’re looking for volunteer chestnut lovers to help bring in this year’s nuts.  If you haven’t harvested before\, here’s all it entails. \nSomeone climbs up the ladder and pushes the burs off. \nPeople on the ground chase down the burs and put them in bags.  Except at SCBI\, we need to bag seed from each tree separately so we can follow them into future generations. \nSomeone on the ground is scribe\, making sure each bag is properly labeled and closed and making sure we harvest from the right trees. \nNo experience needed! \n—If you want to meet in Charlottesville to carpool or caravan\, be at the VA DOF at 9:00 AM \n900 Natural Resources Drive\, Charlottesville \n–If you want to meet at the orchard\, meet at 10:00 AM \nFortunes Cove Orchard \nNelson County. Near Lovingston\, Virginia \nGPS: 37.786984\, -78.893263 \nFrom Charlottesville\, take US-29 S to State Rte 718 in Lovingston.  Follow State Rte 718 for 1.6 miles and turn right onto State Rte 651. Go another 1.6 miles and you’ll be right outside the orchard. When you see the entrance to the TNC Natural Area you are almost there. Continue up the road that looks like someone’s personal driveway to a gate (keep going) the orchard is just up the dirt road.

SUMMARY:Small Stem Assay at New Kent Greenhouses - July 20
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, July 20 from 9:00AM-2:00PM\, TACF’s VA Chapter will be conducting small stem assays at the greenhouse at the Department of Forestry New Kent Forestry Center\, New Kent\, VA. \nThe small stem assay is one method being tested to progeny test large numbers of container-grown chestnut seedlings for resistance to chestnut blight. In the small stem assay\, the stems of chestnut seedlings are inoculated with chestnut blight fungus and canker length is measured every 4 to 6 weeks. The results may help inform us of the most resistant families in our breeding program. \nThis is relatively fun and easy work\, which can be done sitting down inside the ops building adjacent to the greenhouse. Bring water\, snacks\, and lunch. \nFor more information\, contact Mid-Atlantic Regional Science Coordinator\, Tom Saielli at (828) 450-9100 or tom.saielli@acf.org. \nDirections note: Once you turn into the Forestry Center take the next right on George Dean Highway (it’s actually a small gravel road). About 3/4 miles\, take a left at the fork onto John Heltzer Lane. The greenhouse will be just down the road on the left\, you can’t miss it.

SUMMARY:Inoculation at Fried Orchard June 14 - Volunteers Needed
DESCRIPTION:Hi Chestnutners\, \nI just wanted to let you all know that we will be inoculating the Fried Orchard this Thursday\, so if anyone is interested in joining us\, you would certainly be welcome. Obviously if you can’t make it\, especially on short notice\, it’s no problem\, We expect it to be an easy day. \nThe Fried Orchard is just west of C’ville\, less than a half hour away. We are planning to meet at the parking area across from the Piedmont store at 9:00 AM\, we will then carpool to the site together. \nAt the orchard\, we will inoculate each of the backcross trees with two strains of the blight fungus. By inoculating the trees\, we are able to assess which backcross trees cary the genes for resistance to chestnut blight and which trees are susceptible. In a year from now we will evaluate the blight cankers that form and select the best trees to keep in the chapter breeding program. \nThis is a crucial step in the backcross breeding program. We literally plant tens of thousands of trees throughout the TACF breeding program\, but only select the few trees that actually show decent levels of blight resistance\, as well as decent American chestnut traits. \nIf you’re interested in helping with this valuable and interesting part of the process\, meet us at the Piedmont store at 9:00 this coming Thursday. \nBring water\, snacks\, lunch and dress for the weather. \nHere’s the directions: \nPiedmont Store \n2958 Browns Gap Turnpike \nCrozet\, VA 22932 \nHope to see many of you there! \n____________________________________________ \nThomas McNeill Saielli \nMid-Atlantic Regional Science Coordinator \nThe American Chestnut Foundation \n900 Natural Resources Dr \nCharlottesville\, VA 22903 \nTel: 828-450-9100 \ntom.saielli@acf.org \nwww.tacf.org

SUMMARY:Volunteer Opportunity near Charlottesville - May 12
DESCRIPTION:Hi again chestnut enthusiasts! \nI’m looking for a few hands to help save a little demo orchard just south of Charlottesville Saturday\, May 12th at 9:00 AM. \nIt’s a great little planting\, but the grasses are hurting the seedlings and we need to install some tree tubes to protect against rabbits and voles. We’ll probably replace a few seedlings too. With a handful of volunteers and a couple hours of work we can turn this into an awesome demo planting. \nLet me know if you think you can make it\, I can send you directions. As usual\, bring water\, snacks and lunch\, work gloves\, etc. and please dress for the weather. \nThanks again\, hope to see you all soon!! \nTom \n  \nThomas McNeill Saielli \nThe American Chestnut Foundation \n900 Natural Resources Dr \nCharlottesville\, VA 22903 \nTel: 828-450-9100 \ntom.saielli@acf.org \nwww.tacf.org

SUMMARY:Volunteers Needed - Fortune's Cove - May 3
DESCRIPTION:Hi Chestnut Enthusiasts! \nCome one\, Come all – join us for some experimental research at Fortunes Cove Chestnut Orchard on Thursday\, May 3rd. \nWe  have been experimenting with different methods of stump sprout removal.  This includes cutting  and burning the stump sprouts with a flame weeder. (This does not actually cause the stump to catch fire\, but hopefully deadens the crown where stump sprouts emerge.) \nTom Wild and I have been conducting experiments at this orchard and at Blandy and we think we have a reasonably good protocol. Come out to see how this works and you’ll get a chance on the flame thrower! \nLet me know if you think you can make it\, I can send you directions. As usual\, bring water\, snacks and lunch\, work gloves\, etc. and please dress for the weather. \nThomas McNeill Saielli \nThe American Chestnut Foundation \n900 Natural Resources Dr \nCharlottesville\, VA 22903 \nTel: 828-450-9100 \ntom.saielli@acf.org \nwww.tacf.org
