SUMMARY:Inoculation at Mt. Zion June 13 - Volunteers Needed
DESCRIPTION:Dear Chestnut Lovers\, \nWe will be inoculating the chestnut trees in the Mt. Zion orchard on Wednesday afternoon and would love your help.  That’s June 13. \nInoculation involves drilling small holes through the bark\, placing a bit of chestnut blight fungus in the holes\, then taping over the holes to keep the fungus from drying out.  There are several different tasks for volunteers\, including record-keeping.  Many hands will make light work. \nMt. Zion orchard is in Aldie.  We will start around 2:00 and work for 2-3 hours\, depending on how many people come to help. \nIf you have a small\, hand-held drill\, that would be useful.  Otherwise\, we have plenty of supplies.  But bring your own bug spray and sun screen. \nPlease let me know if you’d like to help. \nCatherine Mayes\, President\nVirginia Chapter\, The American Chestnut Foundation\nP.O. Box 158\nMarshall\, VA  20116\n(540) 364-1922

SUMMARY:Help Inoculate Dam Orchard - June 22
DESCRIPTION:Where:  The Dam Orchard\, 8031 Great Run Lane\, Warrenton\, Virginia \nWhen: Thursday\, June 22nd\, 9:00 AM \nWhat: Please bring water \, lunch\,  snacks\, sunblock and dress for the weather (I think it’s supposed to be nice\, maybe late afternoon sprinkles). The work to be fun and not at all difficult. \nNote: If you have a cordless drill w/ batteries and don’t mind bringing it\, please bring it. \nWe will be continuing to inoculate the main trunks of the trees (to screen our backcross trees for variations in blight resistance – this is followed by selections for blight resistance over the next few years\, the best of the best will be used for future breeding work). We are also conducting experimental inoculations on lateral branches in an effort to study different methods for assessing resistance among our potentially resistant backcross trees – pretty cool.

SUMMARY:Help Cull Fortunes Cove Orchard -- June 21
DESCRIPTION:Come one\, come all! \nWe need to go back to Fortunes Cove to finish culling the orchard this Wednesday\, June 21st!! \nIf you have the time and the inclination\, come on out to Fortunes Cove and give us a hand. With plenty of helpers this should be easy\, quick and fun! \nHere is the where\, when and what: \nWhere: \nFortunes Cove Orchard \nNelson County. Near Lovingston\, Virginia \nGPS: 37.780825\, -78.895897 \nFrom Charlottesville\, take US-29 S to State Rte 718 in Lovingston.  Follow State Rte 718 for 1.6 miles and turn right onto State Rte 651. Go another 1.6 miles and you’ll see the orchard. \nWhen: Wednesday\, June 21st at 9:00 AM \nWhat: We are looking for volunteers to help lop and stack the unselected trees at the Fortunes Cove orchard this Wednesday (we culled the orchard last Wednesday\, but need to cut the trees into manageable pieces and stack into burn piles). \nFortune Cove is a large and beautiful Virginia Chapter chestnut orchard. Last year we screened the trees in this orchard in order to assess the blight resistance of all the trees planted there. Some have enough blight resistance to move forward in the chapter breeding program (those are the standing trees in the orchard)\, but the rest of the trees\, the susceptible trees\, were cut down last week and need to be lopped and stacked in burn piles. \nAs the susceptible trees are removed\, the best\, most resistant trees will have room to grow and flower\, and over the years will produce thousands of seeds to be planted in the chapter seed orchard. This is very important work and it’s crucial that the susceptible trees are removed soon. We will remove a couple hundred small trees on Wednesday\, so we need a lot of help (many hands make light work!). \nThanks! Hope to see many of you there!!

SUMMARY:April 20 Ceremony Honors George Grover Cole
DESCRIPTION:The American Chestnut Foundation Dedication Ceremony\nHonoring George Grover Cole\nDATE/TIME:  Thursday\, April 20th at 11:00 a.m. \nLOCATION:  Sports Complex\, 16358 Competition Drive\, Culpeper\, Virginia 22701 \nAHSEVILLE\, N.C. 4/12/17 – The Virginia Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF) cordially invites the general public to attend a Chestnut Dedication Ceremony on Thursday\, April 20th at 11:00 a.m.  The event will be held at the Sports Complex located at 16358 Competition Drive in Culpeper\, Virginia.  Light refreshments will be served. \nMembers of the Virginia Chapter will dedicate two potentially blight-resistant American chestnut trees and unveil a sign dedicated to the memory of George Grover Cole. Virginia Chapter President Catherine D. Mayes will make a presentation honoring Cole and his legacy. \nBorn on December 30\, 1942 in Charlottesville\, Cole was the son of the late William Burnett and Virginia Gooding Cole. He was an Air Force veteran and a graduate of Virginia Tech. He retired as a Veterinary Technician with the State of Virginia. After retirement he was owner and operator of a small engine repair shop in Orange. He also was a life member of the Orange County Rescue Squad\, on the Board of Trustees and past president of the Graham Cemetery Association. \nAbout The American Chestnut Foundation\nOnce the mighty giants of the eastern forest\, American chestnuts stood up to 100 feet tall\, and numbered in the billions. From Maine to Georgia\, the American chestnut was a vital part of the eastern forest\, provided abundant food for wildlife\, and was an essential component of the economy. In the beginning of the 20th century the fungal pathogen responsible for chestnut blight\, accidentally imported from Asia\, spread rapidly through the eastern forests. By 1950 the fungus had eliminated the American chestnut as a mature forest tree. \nIn 1983\, a committed group of scientists and laymen decided to do something about this ecological disaster while the species could still be saved. They formed TACF to initiate a complex breeding program to transfer genes containing disease resistance from Asian chestnut species to American chestnut. In just 20 years\, these talented scientists and volunteers began to produce the first generation of trees that are 96% American chestnut but contain Asiatic genes for blight resistance. Now supported by more than 5\,000 members and hundreds of volunteers in 23 states\, the organization is planting and testing offspring of those trees as it continues to build and improve its breeding population. With the aid of many partner organizations\, TACF is leading the restoration of an iconic species once on the brink of extinction. \nThe American Chestnut Foundation is a non-profit conservation organization headquartered in Asheville\, NC\, with 3 regional offices located in Charlottesville\, VA\, So. Burlington\, VT\, and State College\, PA. The organization’s research farm in Meadowview\, VA has more than 50\,000 trees planted in various stages of development. \nFor more information on TACF and its work\, please contact TACF Communications Manager Ruth Goodridge at 828-281-0047 or email: ruth.goodridge@acf.org.
