SUMMARY:IN-TACF Chapter Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Large surviving American chestnut in Roselawn\, IN. Photo by Donna Lucas. \nThe IN-TACF Chapter Annual Meeting will be held Saturday\, December 14 at 11:30 AM in the lower level meeting room of the First Christian Church in Martinsville. TACF’s Director of Restoration\, Sara Fitzsimmons\, will be the special guest speaker and will participate in the conversation about changes and updates to the chapter’s breeding program. Chapter Science Officer\, Jim McKenna\, will also speak about the breeding program and share information about the orchards. The chapter will also be looking for new volunteers to become citizen scientists\, helping the chapter in their backcross breeding efforts. \nPrior to the meeting it is encouraged that chapter members — those who receive Chestnut magazine — read Dr. Jared Westbrook’s analysis of the current backcross trees and his plan for future breeding\, published in the 2019 fall issue (page 23). Discussion about the transgenic chestnut research at SUNY’s College of Environmental Science and Forestry\, and where this program is headed\, will also take place at this gathering. This tree is showing a very high level of blight tolerance and is undergoing the regulatory process through several government agencies. \nThe IN-TACF Chapter welcomes current and potential members to this event so please mark December 14 on your calendar. Refreshments and sandwiches will be served so please RSVP to Chapter President\, Glenn Kotnik (317) 459-4443.
