SUMMARY:Help Monitor a Chestnut Planting - March 13
DESCRIPTION:Monitoring Nick’s Creek Planting\nWe will check survival and growth of the Nick’s Creek planting near the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area Headquarters (south of I-81 Exit 45).  It’s a great site with over 95% survival and the 550 trees averaging 60 inches in height as measured in 2017.  In addition\, we will move extra fencing materials from the planting site to the road for removal. \nWhen: Wednesday\, March 13th\, 9:00 AM to late-afternoon. Rain date:  March 25th. \nNumber Volunteers Desired:  If we have 8 or more volunteers\, we should finish by mid-afternoon. \nWhere:  The site is about a 45 minute drive from Meadowview. We will meet at the Glenn C. Price Lab and carpool to site\, contact us if you would like to meet at the site.  29010 Hawthorne Drive (just beyond Indoor Farms Greenhouse)\, Meadowview\, VA 24361\, (About 2.5 miles from I-81\, Exit 22) \nLevel of difficulty: This site is a forested hillside which is relatively rough with downed logs and thick brambles.  You may want to bring hand pruning shears to cut brambles around the trees. \nNote: Bring water\, lunch & snacks\, sturdy boots\, and dress for the weather. \nIf you are able to help\, please send an email to swvabranch@gmail.com\nSWVA Restoration Branch\nVirginia Chapter\, The American Chestnut Foundation

SUMMARY:Call for Chestnut Volunteers at Meadowview March 7
DESCRIPTION:A Call for Volunteers \nThe American Chestnut Foundation (TACF) is organizing a volunteer workday at the Meadowview Research Farms on Thursday\, March 7th. We plan to finish sowing American chestnut backcross seeds (~2\,500) in the Meadowview Greenhouse during this time. The work will be divided into a 9 AM – 12 PM shift and a 1 PM – 4 PM shift (depending on how the morning shift goes\, the afternoon shift may end early). For each shift\, we are seeking 4-8 volunteers that will work with TACF staff to sow seeds. Please let us know what shift(s) you are interested in working and whether or not you would like to have lunch provided by TACF. (We will either have Subway or Bella’s pizza depending on turnout.)  Please specify any dietary preferences or restrictions if you will join us for lunch. \nDescription of the work \nSowing will be performed in our greenhouse which is heated to around 55-60 degrees. However\, if it is sunny\, it may get up to 75 or 80 degrees\, so dressing in layers is recommended. The work will not be too strenuous\, but will involve lifting bags of potting media\, lifting and moving trays of filled pots\, and standing for extended periods of time to plant seeds. Tasks can be divided based on physical ability/need\, and seed sowing may be done while seated for those who may be unable to stand for long periods of time. Chairs will also be provided for anyone who may need to take a break at any point. \nWhat to bring \nWater\, lunch or snacks (if not taking the Subway option)\, and appropriate clothing for variable and/or wet conditions. \nRSVP to SWVA Restoration Branch – Chestnut <swvabranch@gmail.com>
