SUMMARY:Small Stem Assay at New Kent - November 27
DESCRIPTION:If you’re available and interested\, on Tuesday\, November 27th we will be collecting final data on our small stem assays at the greenhouse at the New Kent Forestry Center\, New Kent\, VA. We will also prepare seedlings for planting in one of our orchards (meaning we will add bar-code tags\, pull seedlings from the pots and bag them). \nJust to recap\, the small stem assay is one method being used to test chestnut seedlings for resistance to chestnut blight. In the small stem assay\, the stems of chestnut seedlings were inoculated with chestnut blight fungus and canker length has been measured every 4 to 6 weeks. The results may help inform us of the most resistant families in our breeding program. We now plant the seedlings in an orchard in KY and will collect additional data next year in the orchard. \nI think it will be interesting to see how the seedlings are doing. There should be a spectrum of resistance – some seedlings will be dead\, others will look great\, and everything in-between. It’s interesting research. \nSMALL STEM ASSAY at New Kent GREENHOUSES \nDATE:  Tuesday\, November 27th \nTIMES:  11:00am – 3:00pm \nBRING:  Water\, snacks\, lunch (if you plan on staying that long). \nDirections \nNew Kent Forestry Center \n11301 Pocahontas Trail\, Providence Forge\, VA 23140 \nOnce you turn into the Forestry Center take the next right on George Dean Highway (it’s actually a small gravel road). About 3/4 miles\, take a left at the fork onto John Heltzer Lane. The greenhouse will be just down the road on the left\, you can’t miss it. \nPlease let me know if you can join us and/or have any questions. \nThanks! \nTom \nThomas McNeill Saielli \nMid-Atlantic Regional Science Coordinator \nThe American Chestnut Foundation \n900 Natural Resources Dr \nCharlottesville\, VA 229Tel: 828-450-9100 \ntom.saielli@acf.org \nwww.tacf.org

SUMMARY:Small Stem Assay at New Kent Greenhouses - July 20
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, July 20 from 9:00AM-2:00PM\, TACF’s VA Chapter will be conducting small stem assays at the greenhouse at the Department of Forestry New Kent Forestry Center\, New Kent\, VA. \nThe small stem assay is one method being tested to progeny test large numbers of container-grown chestnut seedlings for resistance to chestnut blight. In the small stem assay\, the stems of chestnut seedlings are inoculated with chestnut blight fungus and canker length is measured every 4 to 6 weeks. The results may help inform us of the most resistant families in our breeding program. \nThis is relatively fun and easy work\, which can be done sitting down inside the ops building adjacent to the greenhouse. Bring water\, snacks\, and lunch. \nFor more information\, contact Mid-Atlantic Regional Science Coordinator\, Tom Saielli at (828) 450-9100 or tom.saielli@acf.org. \nDirections note: Once you turn into the Forestry Center take the next right on George Dean Highway (it’s actually a small gravel road). About 3/4 miles\, take a left at the fork onto John Heltzer Lane. The greenhouse will be just down the road on the left\, you can’t miss it.
