DESCRIPTION:Our annual meeting will be held on Saturday\, October 21 at the Urbana library from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. \nThe Chestnut Meeting Open to All. \nThe annual meeting of the Maryland Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation is Saturday\, October 21\, at the Urbana Library from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. This is a great opportunity to meet American chestnut tree enthusiasts and learn about the ongoing work in Maryland to restore this magnificent tree to its former glory. There will be speakers and refreshments. \nEveryone is welcome—there is no charge and membership in The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF) is not required to attend and enjoy the presentations\, the food\, and the good fellowship. \nThere will be two special speakers: Tom Saielli\, TACF’s Maryland/Virginia/West Virginia regional science coordinator\, will present an update on the latest research and developments leading to blight-resistant American chestnut trees suitable for restoration in Maryland forests. \nThe second and keynote speaker will be the legendary Dr. Fred Hebard\, long-time chief scientist of TACF and now chief scientist emeritus. Dr. Hebard’s talk is titled\, “Forty-Five Years Working to Develop Blight Resistance in American Chestnut.” Dr. Hebard will primarily describe the status of the TACF backcross breeding program and its prospects\, but also the role of hypovirulence in blight control and the biology of large American chestnut trees\, some of whom have been surviving blight for more than 85 years. \nThere will be a brief business meeting and vote on chapter officers for 2018. The meeting includes a light buffet lunch and snacks\, at no cost. Also\, a limited number of chestnut seeds and seedlings will be available\, also at no cost. \nThe meeting room at the library is in the lower level\, easily reached from the parking area behind the library. \nGary Carver\, President \nMaryland Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation (including Delaware and the District of Columbia) \n  \n
