How Many TACF Members are also NEA Members?
By Clark Beebe, TACF PA/NJ Chapter Member
The National Education Association (NEA) wants to publish an article on volunteering and they are looking for TACF members to interview. The catch: you must be a member of TACF and a member of NEA.

Clark Beebe, vice president of the PA/NJ Chapter is leading this effort. He's looking for NEA members who also volunteer with TACF (i.e. host orchards, help plant, inoculate, harvest, work with schools, libraries, write articles, staff booths at outreach events, stuff envelopes at a local chapter office, etc.). The goal is to emphasize the broad range of volunteer opportunities available at TACF. Please contact Clark Beebe if you're interested in participating.
Email Receipts: Another Step Towards Conservation
By Tina Wayne & Judy Antaramian
As a conservation organization, TACF is committed to conserving resources on all levels. As a result, we are excited to announce our new ability to email both gift acknowledgements and receipts. This effort not only reduces our consumption of paper/envelopes, but also saves money on postage.

Email acknowledgements/receipts will be sent to individuals who renew their membership. Due to detailed information required for new and/or seed-level members, these individuals will continue to receive acknowledgement/receipts by mail.

But you can always opt out of this new service. Simply let us know. Please update your email with TACF by sending a message from your most current email address to chestnut@acf.orgThank you in advance for helping TACF reduce our costs!
Hand-Carved Chestnut Table Created & Donated by TACF Member
Long-time TACF member K.O. Summerville delivered a chestnut table he created and donated to TACF's national office. He and Doug Gillis, Carolinas chapter president, acquired the wood from Appalachian Antique Hardwoods in Waynesville, NC. The chestnut leaf decor on the legs represent spring, summer and fall. The marble slab that helps stabilize the table came from Scott & Nancy Pryor's farm where the Carolinas chapter seed orchard is located. TACF would like to thank K.O. for the contribution of this beautiful table and for his continued support of the Foundation. See the photos!
Chestnut Trees Rooted in History
By Bill Woolley, Lake Hopatcong Foundation Volunteer
In mid-September, five chestnut seedlings were planted at the Lake Hopatcong train station in Lake Hopatcong, NJ. American chestnut trees were plentiful in the area before the blight that killed an estimated four billion trees by the mid-1950s. The plantings were part of a historic restoration project taking place at the train station. The intent is to use native plants that reflect the era of the building, which is when the idea came to plant American chestnuts. TACF contributed the seedlings that were planted on the grounds. Read the full article that appears as a blog post on The Lake Hopatcong Foundation's website.
Tour of Peter Kliem's Black Forest in Greenville, Maine
The Piscataquis County Soil and Water Conservation District, along with partnering organizations (Small Woodland Owners Association of Maine (SWOAM), Maine Forest Service (MFS) and the University of Maine) presented a tour of Peter Kliem's Black Forest in Greenville, Maine. The focus of this tour was to highlight and discuss high-value crop tree production and maintenance as well as learn about the University of Maine's American chestnut trail that is located on the property. More than 50 people attended the event. Listen to a broadcast of the tour on "Bob Duchesne's Wild Maine," Sports Radio 92.9!
