Students at the University of New England’s (UNE) Maine campus grew American chestnut hybrid seedlings this spring in the campus greenhouses. The work was supervised by Thomas Klak, Professor of Environmental Studies at UNE and Chairman of the Gene Conservation Committee at the Maine Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation. In mid-July the seedlings were planted at Harbor View Memorial Park in Portland. The trees will be tended to by the local neighborhood association. Read the full story at the West End News.
