Harvest at VA-TACF Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute

September 22 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
Harvesting chestnuts

The event will begin at 10:00 AM and will finish by 3:00 PM (or earlier). Please bring weather-appropriate clothing, water, a snack, and thick gloves if you have them.

To RSVP: email Regional Science Coordinator Cassie Stark, gro.fcat@krats.eissac. The gate attendant at SCBI must have your name prerecorded for entry onto site. Orchard location will be sent to you from Cassie.

Additional instructions:

Directions: Once you are past the gate, turn left onto Conservation Dr and then take another left onto Slate Hill Dr. Follow Slate Hill Dr until you reach a gravel road that starts to head uphill; this should lead you to a circular drive. The orchard is located downhill past the stone lookout. You should see cars and the orchard sign. If you need additional instructions, see the attached map or ask the gate attendant.

Harvesting chestnuts

Bring: thick work gloves (the burs are VERY spiky!) and some bug spray. Sensible shoes are a must! Dress for the weather and don’t forget to bring plenty of water and a snack. No experience is necessary.

Note: We will have extra gloves if you do not own any.

In case of rain: If we experience inclement weather, we will email and/or text you. Watch your inbox!
