On February 1st at 9:00 we will be planting chestnuts in pots to raise in a local greenhouse. We hope to plant up to 2,000 of our hybrid B3F2 seeds at the Baltimore County owned greenhouse in Cockeysville. We expect this will take 15-20 people several hours, possibly all day. After the trees have grown we will use small stem assays to determine blight resistance while in the greenhouse. The best trees will be planted in our seed orchards in the fall.
Jobs available will be: 1) packing pots with potting mixture, 2) labeling pots, 3) planting chestnut seeds in pots, 4) watering completed plantings. Light garden gloves might help if you don’t want to get their hands dirty.
The greenhouse is located in the Baltimore County Agricultural Center at 1114 Shawan Road, Cockeysville, Maryland 21030. (About ten miles north of Baltimore off I83.)
