We will be planting Virginia Chapter hybrid backcross seedlings at the Middle Mountain Orchard next Wednesday, November 7th, with a backup/rain date on Thursday, November 15th. On both dates, we will meet at the Piedmont store at 10:00 and caravan up together.
We are going to plant large chestnut seedlings in a beautiful orchard. These seedlings represent decades of backcross breeding and are not only potentially blight-resistant, they are also indistinguishable from pure American chestnuts. Backcross orchards produce seeds for seed orchards…one step away from chestnut restoration!
The work should be fairly easy, and with enough volunteers it should only take a couple hours. If we don’t finish on the 7th, we will come back to finish on the 15th.
As always bring water, snacks, lunch and some garden gloves.
