Tree Campus USA Day at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU)

April 19, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

Come out to the EKU/KY-TACF chestnut regional seed orchard on Friday, April 19 and participate in Tree Campus USA Day! TACF’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Science Coordinator, Tom Saielli, will give orchard tours and share information about current and future plantings, breeding plans, and blight-tolerant testing.

A special talk will be given by KY-TACF Chapter member, Rex Mann about why it’s so important to restore the American chestnut tree. Rex shared his moving story about the tree at a TEDx Talk last September in Ohio. To get a feel of what you can expect, click here to listen to his TEDx Talk. You’ll want to take advantage of this opportunity to hear Rex’s talk in person at this event!

Visit the event tent to view crafts made from American chestnut, and learn about everything from how to use the TreeSnap app, to pollinators, to what the American chestnut meant (and can still mean) to wildlife.

There will also be an opportunity to volunteer at the seed orchard. Projects include weed pulling, mulching, completing deer fence details, setting raptor perches, breaking up dirt clumps to facilitate mowing, and more.

A schedule of the days events, as well as directions, can be found here.
