Asheville, NC – The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF) is proud to announce a new partnership with Stella-Jones, a leading manufacturer of products focused on supporting infrastructure that are essential to the delivery of electrical distribution and transmission, and the operation and maintenance of railway transportation systems. This collaboration brings together TACF’s decades-long mission to restore the American chestnut and Stella-Jones’ commitment to sustainability.

For centuries, the American chestnut was a cornerstone of eastern US forests, providing strong, rot-resistant wood for railway ties, utility poles, and industrial lumber— some of which are key infrastructure products Stella-Jones manufactures today. However, the species was nearly eradicated in the mid-20th century by a devastating blight that was accidentally imported into the United States in the late 1800s. Recognizing the historic significance and valuable properties of American chestnut wood, Stella-Jones is pleased to support TACF’s efforts to bring this iconic tree back to its native range.

“Stella-Jones’ dedication to the sustainable sourcing of wood for its products aligns seamlessly with our mission to restore the American chestnut,” said TACF’s Interim President & CEO Bruce Levine. “Their expertise in wood products manufacturing and their understanding of the importance of resilient, high-quality wood fiber make them an ideal partner in our work to restore this once-prolific species.”

Stella-Jones supplies the continent’s major electrical utilities companies with treated wood utility poles and North America’s Class 1, short line, and commercial railroad operators with treated wood railway ties and timbers. It also supports infrastructure with industrial products, namely timbers for railway bridges, crossings and construction, marine and foundation pilings, and coal tar-based products. Additionally, the Company manufactures and distributes premium treated residential lumber and accessories to Canadian and American retailers for outdoor applications.

“We are delighted to partner with The American Chestnut Foundation, an organization that shares our deep commitment to sustainability and environmental preservation,” said Eric Vachon, President and Chief Executive Officer of Stella-Jones. “With our ongoing focus on sustainably sourced wood fiber, the conservation of species such as the American chestnut resonates deeply with us, and we believe that by working together, we can make a meaningful impact in its restoration and support a healthy and balanced ecosystem. This partnership embodies our shared values of stewardship and responsibility toward the planet, and we are excited about the opportunities ahead to protect and nurture these vital trees for future generations.”

Together, TACF and Stella-Jones look forward to collaborating on initiatives that promote American chestnut restoration and raise awareness about the tree’s historical importance.
