TACF’s OH Chapter Busy with Spring Plantings

Members and volunteers in the OH Chapter kicked off spring by diving into some plantings in their region. The first planting took place on April 11 at Hocking State Forest. Potentially blight-resistant (PBR) American chestnut seedlings were planted beside a state highway, a location that will be visible to passersby, giving them an opportunity to easily view the plantings and read the signage that will soon be added. Butternuts from the Forest Service Hardwood Tree Improvement and Regeneration Center were also planted in the same area to increase species diversity.

The second planting was on April 16 at Zaleski State Forest, next to the Forest of Honor. Signage will be added to inform and educate the public about the purpose of the planting. A late snow shower moved in during the day but it didn’t deter the crew from getting the work done!

The OH Chapter has a small grant system. United Plant Savers applied and received the grant to conduct a planting of 100 PBR chestnuts. An AmeriCorps member and six volunteers assisted with the planting, which took place on May 3. It’s located close to the main learning center which is being constructed from salvaged ash logs harvested from the property. The orchard’s close accessibility to the center will provide a learning opportunity for visitors to the property.

Chestnuts from all three plantings were grown at Clements Nursery in West Virginia and are protected with tree shelters from Plantra.
