Free Nut Offer

The VT/NH Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation is once again pleased to offer free American chestnut seeds to Chapter members. If you would like to participate, or have related questions, please contact Dan Jones at: daniel_b_jones@msn.com

The nuts were harvested from wild American chestnuts so they may eventually become blighted. These nuts have no inherent blight resistance or tolerance, even though they were harvested from trees which have survived well themselves.

Generally, we send each participant about eight nuts and eight deep pots, depending on availability. Nuts will be sent to you in early April with planting instructions and can be potted immediately. They must be protected in the event of late frost.

A chestnut seed planting instructional video by Board member Doug McLane can be seen by clicking the following link:

Thank for your interest in, and support for, chestnut restoration,

Dan Jones, Board Member

Meet Scout! Scout is a survivor, and we are very proud of him for remaining healthy. He has recently discovered his new TACF family and loves coming to work with his dad, TACF's Director of Development, John, to see his new friends.

In 2014, the mountains were calling. John relocated to Western North Carolina and was fortunate enough to return to his alma mater as a development and fundraising professional. While working at Mars Hill University, he obtained his Master of Management degree.

This summer Meadowview Research Farms will be taking over our socials every Wednesday. Join us as we delve into the exciting research happening at this location. ________________

This week, at Meadowview Research Farms, we conducted a Small Stem Assay (SSA)! This experiment serves as a preliminary assessment of the resistance of blight in a Chestnut seedling. This year's SSA is the All v All project, which compares different crosses from across the range to one another. The SSA process involves making a small incision in a one- to two-year-old seedling, approximately the thickness of a pencil. The blight is then applied directly to the incision, and the seedling is monitored and data are collected for about 90 days. This method helps estimate the blight resistance of each seedling. We extend our gratitude to the Southern and Mid-Atlantic RSCs for their assistance throughout this procedure!
