Help the VA-TACF Chapter Plant Chestnut Seeds

March 27, 2019 @ 9:00 am - March 30, 2019 @ 5:00 pm

The VA-TACF Chapter is looking for a few good volunteers to celebrate the arrival of spring by planting chestnuts. What better way to celebrate the coming warmer weather than to be outside getting a little dirt under your fingernails for a good cause? We have 5,000 chestnuts to plant (last year was a huge harvest) so we need all of you!

The planting is scheduled to take place March 27-30 at Sky Meadows State Park in Delaplane the first couple of days. Then we’ll head to Banshee Reeks in Leesburg or the State Arboretum in Boyce. (Specific dates/times will be determined based on when the orchards are ready.)

The planting does not require physical strength but you need to be able to kneel and stand up off and on throughout the day. Everyone will gather at 9:00AM, break for lunch (provided by the chapter) and work a few more hours after lunch each day. Park in the main visitor lot and walk to the orchard. There will be people present to show you where to go if you need assistance.

What to bring: either a trowel or a bulb planter, or both; if you have a 5-gallon bucket or a rubber mallet for pounding stakes, bring those. (Label your tools so you can find it when you’re done.) Also bring a water bottle, bug repellent, snacks (if necessary), and sun protection. Please contact chapter member, Catherine Mayes with your interest and availability by email or voicemail: (540) 364-1922. Hope to see you in there!
