Chestnuts and the HemlockFest Virtual Festival 2020

Chestnut Enthusiasts!

Check out this video “thank you” to Lumpkin Coalition and Hemlockfest music festival for their past support of GA-TACF’s American chestnut restoration program. It features long-time TACF supporter and master keyboardist Chuck Leavell, as well as a brief background on the work TACF is doing. HemlockFest is normally a three day camping, music, arts and crafts, and outdoor activities fund raiser that takes place near Dahlonega the first weekend in November.  Nearly $50,000 in festival proceeds have come to GA-TACF over the past four years!  See hemlockfest.org/blog/ to learn more about this year’s Nov. 7 virtual event – please “attend” if you can.  A shorter version of this video (without the “sciency” stuff in the middle) will play during the event itself. Among many other great musical acts, the Indigo Girls will be playing!

Thanks for allowing the public to attend ~ this was super interesting!

This past week, University of North Georgia students led by Karrie Ann Fadroski prepped and direct-seeding 100 hybrid chestnuts in their Phytophthora root rot resistance breeding orchard. This is at UNG's Hurricane Creek research station. GA-TACF's Jack Rogers helped coordinate and lead this effort. Trees were sourced from breeding orchards at Milner Farm (Frank Milner), Bottomlands (Scott Frazier), and Henry Hootin' Holler (Henry family) and were harvested and processed by Berry College students.

To learn more about this kind of collaborative work and how you might help out, please attend our annual meeting on April 12 at Kennesaw State University (see announcement on this Facebook page).
