Lecture on Restoring the American Chestnut in Connecticut

Bill Adamsen, President of the CT Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation will lecture and host a discussion on the natural history of the chestnut, and the Foundation's efforts to capture the diverse genetics of local trees in their breeding efforts. This lecture will take place on April 27th at 7:00PM at the Oliver Wolcott Library on South Street in Litchfield, CT. The lecture will cover the natural history of the tree, tree identification, how to save a tree with blight and current research programs into creating a blight resistant tree.

For more about the lecture see the web sites of http://cttacf.org or http://www.owlibrary.org. Mr. Adamsen holds a BS degree in Environmental Science from SUNY Purchase. He first became passionate about restoring the chestnut after listening to stories about the tree's magnificence from his grandmother. Even as a child he was amazed by the beauty of the long slender leaves and occasional flowering bursts from short lived shoots growing in CT's northwest forests. Mr. Adamsen will be bringing a limited number of American chestnut seedlings to distribute to
attendees (on a first come first served basis).

Save this for when you plant your chestnuts! All you need is a deep pot, well-draining soil, and proper seed orientation for success. 🌱

I appreciate the effort, but you’re just planting a tree that will die young.

Another way is put out a bunch of chestnuts, walnuts, acorns etc and let the squirrels plant them (they won't eat them all)!

Where do you get the American chestnuts?

I highly recommend checking out this article by Robert Foster, in which he reminisces about the time he helped save a large, standing American chestnut tree. He also shares an older article that tells the full story of the tree and the effort to preserve it. The original piece, published in American Forests magazine, is titled “Saving Something of Value” by Herbert E. McLean and is copied below his introduction.
