Step it Up in Salem

Our Work Party on Saturday the 14th in Salem was a total success. Great weather, great crowd, good fun!

Saturday was “Step It Up Day” a “National Day of Climate Action” and some of us felt that we were key potential participants, since this is a real hands-on grassroots activity with the goal of restoring a species that will help provide a balanced ecological approach to sequestering atmospheric carbon, and providing the foundation to a restoration program for a significant ecological niche.

So we listed the site on the National Step it Up event index at http://events.stepitup2007.org/events/show/1900

David Bingham had most of the site-work complete, and lots of different chores including: weeding, tube assembly and marking, soil mixing, soil sterilization, seed layout and finally planting of the seed. The work started at 1pm and lasted until sunset.

Team gathers for instruction
Allison and Jack assemble the planting tubes. Each tube is marked for location and type (backcross, American, or control) of nut planted
David manages the field organically, so surprises such as this young Rani sylvestri are not uncommon
David and Elizabeth plant the American chestnut seeds.
The hard working planters gather for a photo.

Save this for when you plant your chestnuts! All you need is a deep pot, well-draining soil, and proper seed orientation for success. 🌱

I appreciate the effort, but you’re just planting a tree that will die young.

Another way is put out a bunch of chestnuts, walnuts, acorns etc and let the squirrels plant them (they won't eat them all)!

Where do you get the American chestnuts?

I highly recommend checking out this article by Robert Foster, in which he reminisces about the time he helped save a large, standing American chestnut tree. He also shares an older article that tells the full story of the tree and the effort to preserve it. The original piece, published in American Forests magazine, is titled “Saving Something of Value” by Herbert E. McLean and is copied below his introduction.
