Growing Chestnut in Pots

It is really easy to grow chestnuts in tree tubes or other pots ? all that is required are the appropriate pots, soil mix, nuts, labelling, and the initiative to plant and care for the young trees. Planting in pots is great if you like to have gifts for friends, or want to get a head start on growing before you've identified a place to plant. Tree pots come in a variety of sizes with baskets that help organize the pots into an efficient grid. Below are some photos of American chestnuts provided free of charge by the Science Coordinators. It is a smart idea to get to know your local science coordinator! I coerced my daughters into helping plant. When first planted, I cover with a wire mesh to keep out the squirrels or anything else that might want to eat the nuts. Not all germinate and survive, though most do. If using tree pots to grow back-cross trees such as BC3F3, be sure to use very clear labelling.

For pots I use the Stuewe CP413 and the Tray10 to hold the pots. For the soil, I was advised to use Scott's Moisture Control.

The last time I saw a chestnut tree was 50 years ago in Detroit. I was a kid and saw the trees lined up and down our street die one by one.

Has anyone ever tried spraying copper sulfate & lime mixture on a tree to kill the fungus

Wonder if the genes can be changed on the blight fungus so it will die off.

We have one across the street from our new home in Leicester NC. We have been collecting!

What's the difference between the American Chestnut and the Chinese chestnut tree? I recently planted 7 of the Chinese variety.

Not barefoot though!!! 😆
