CT-TACF 2026 Tentative Spring Orchard Planting Schedule

We will be planting chestnuts at several of our orchards this spring.  The schedule below is tentative and may be changed for weather or other circumstances.  This schedule will be updated regularly as additional plantings get added or need to be rescheduled.  Bring work gloves and plenty of water, and protection from sun and ticks.

Thursday, May 28th  9:00 AM – 12:00 PM  Manchester Land Trust Bush Hill Preserve.  300 Bush Hill Rd. Manchester.  Follow the driveway in to the maintenance garage.  The orchard is on the opposite hillside.

Sunday, May 31st  1:00 PM – 4:00 PM  Ridgefield, McKeon Farm. 60 Old Stagecoach Rd., Ridgefield. Meet at the main parking area and we will drive down to the orchard area.

Saturday, June 6th  10:00 AM – 12:00 PM  Litchfield, Wigwam Brook Preserve orchard, Lipeka Rd.  Planting and orchard dedication ceremony.  See event details here: https://tacf.org/event/ct-chapter-wigwam-brook-chestnut-orchard-dedication/.  We will also be doing orchard preparation work on Wednesday, June 3rd starting at 1:00 PM.

Sunday, June 7th 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM  Stafford, Norcross Seed Orchard, 10 Lamb Rd, Stafford.

Sunday, June 14th  10:00 AM – 1:00 PM Winchester Land Trust Hurlbut Field chestnut orchard, 670 Grantville Rd., Winchester Center.  Park at the kiosk and follow the trail to the chestnut orchard.

We are also trying to schedule plantings in Stafford, Mansfield, Killingworth, Willington and Simsbury.  If you would like to help with those potential plantings, let us know and we will keep you informed on the date when they are scheduled.

Save this for when you plant your chestnuts! All you need is a deep pot, well-draining soil, and proper seed orientation for success. 🌱

I appreciate the effort, but you’re just planting a tree that will die young.

Another way is put out a bunch of chestnuts, walnuts, acorns etc and let the squirrels plant them (they won't eat them all)!

Where do you get the American chestnuts?

I highly recommend checking out this article by Robert Foster, in which he reminisces about the time he helped save a large, standing American chestnut tree. He also shares an older article that tells the full story of the tree and the effort to preserve it. The original piece, published in American Forests magazine, is titled “Saving Something of Value” by Herbert E. McLean and is copied below his introduction.
